Description

Lizzo released her debut album Coconuts this past January. In the three months since its release, the album has been streamed more than 18 million times across all platforms. It was certified Platinum by Apple Music and has received praise from music-industry luminaries like Shawn Mendes and Kim Petras.

It’s been compared to singer Janelle Monae’s debut album and even has elements of hip-hop. Similar to other musician’s debut records, Coconuts displays the artist at their most vulnerable and raw state, while still maintaining a boundary between what the audience is allowed to hear and what they are expected to see.

The 17-track album includes a track called “Ride on Time” which was written by G-Eazy, whom she dated for two years before splitting with in May of 2018. In this article, we’ll be looking at the album’s most socially relevant track titled “Coconut Oil.

“Coconut Oil” is the fifth track on Lizzo’s debut album. The lyrics to this track begin with the line, “I’ve been told they can’t relate to my swag,” where she uses “swag” in place of a more vulgar slang term often used to demean women. This lyric represents how she isn’t overly concerned with other people’s opinions of her, and that she isn’t standing for her appearance (or lack thereof) to be something that is used against her.
