Description

Mark of the Vampire (Blu-ray) is a 1941 American horror film directed by Tod Browning, and starring Lionel Barrymore, Elizabeth Allen, Bela Lugosi and Lionel Atwell. It follows a shady scientist who is trying to perfect his invention: an artificial combination of human blood and wheat gluten that makes people turn into vampires. It was based on Bram Stoker’s novel The Lair of the White Worm released in 1908.

It had been five years since the last time we saw Lionel Barrymore as he still had many movies left before his death in 1939 but unfortunately this one will be followed by him dying before reaching his planned retirement age of 87. Barrymore would have been born in 1889 in a couple of years after his birth his mother, Georgina Drew Barrymore would leave his father and take Lionel with her to her mothers house.
In 1893 he became part of the group of actors known as “The Barrymores”, which was made up of Lionel, Ethel and John. He was known for being extremely close to Ethel while they were still alive both took roles together on many occasions.

  1. The Purple Heart

This is one of the top 10 movies ( I consider ) in my personal library of more than 4,000 feature films. Considering the technology of 1935 makes this film even more remarkable. Bela is the star, of course, in this classic “horror” film as Tod Browning went to the well one more time in great success. The plot / storyline, writing is fabulous. Get this one for YOUR classic 30’s horror collection. You’ll be glad you did.

  2. juan n olivarez

I love this movie. It is a remake of the silent classic, that is now lost, London After Midnight with Lon Chaney. Great atmosphere and settings, great actors, Barrymore, Atwill, Lugosi and a great supporting cast. Priced extremely reasonable and always enjoyable.

  5. Dan Knedel

Really enjoyed this good ol’ fashion spook movie. It has a great cast, and the effects are great for it’s time. I think the whole family will enjoy this one. Hope they bring this one out on dvd but if not, find a vhs tape and enjoy.

  6. Denyse C.

What a hoot! For all things nostalgic, watch it. It’s a blast.

  7. Dave Cow

    Great movie. Almost cult classic

  8. Kate D.

This is THE most cool and interesting vampire movie ever made as far as I’m concerned. Surprising and yet spooky and just a little bit scary. The end is great. Bela Lugosi is so good in this, so is Lionel Barrymore and the rest of the cast. I’ve watched it many times and added it to my top ten movie favorites. Not for kids. It’s still has scary situations in graveyards and tombs. But for grownups who like vampire themed movies, its a scream…pun intended.
