Description

NETGEAR has been developing its Orbi Whole Home Mesh network technology for a while now, and the company is now announcing that it has finally released an official release. The new Orbi WiFi mesh network is designed to provide users with a more efficient wireless experience by combining multiple antennas into a single unit. Additionally, the system has been made more snappy by using 2.4GHz and 5GHz frequencies instead of the slower 3.6GHz frequency used by other WiFi networks.

Upgraded to the Orbi Mesh Wifi system from a single router and extender. It has been a game changer. We not only get better coverage for our wifi cameras and other devices, but overall better speed throughout the house and downstairs (~1600 sq ft) and into the back yard. The times of having to try to move to a better spot for a good wifi signal are over.

I purchased this because I live in a 7-room house with brick/cement walls. Without the Orbi, the internet is non-existent in the farthest rooms from the original modem/router. When I added the Orbi, the signal improved a thousand times. Thank you!

I’ll admit that I was annoyed to have to buy this considering what I pay for internet service at my house. After having my internet service provider out to my house multiple times to troubleshoot why I kept getting kicked offline, one of the technicians recommended this mesh system. I put off buying it because, like I said, I was annoyed. The internet I pay for should just work if you ask me but I’ll get off my soapbox. My home is roughly 2100 sqft and single level with a room over the garage. My router and modem are set up downstairs but I work from home half of the week upstairs. For some reason, being upstairs caused a disturbance in my internet connection and I was constantly getting kicked off of my remote work sessions. After getting kicked offline for what felt like the millionth time, I finally broke down and bought this. I did have some trouble getting everything set up/connected and I had to call customer service and my ISP to finish the setup. Once installed though, I have not been kicked offline once so overall, I’d say it was worth the investment.

I got the Orbi RBK13 as a solution for a family member who has experienced frequent problems maintaining a wifi connection throughout their home. They don’t have the high end devices or a fast Internet connection so maximum speed was not a concern. They just wanted an economical solution that provided a solid wifi connection throughout their house. This Orbi does just that.Setup was a breeze although I chose to use the router’s embedded web interface instead of the Orbi app. Kudos to Netgear for continuing to provide this option even though they don’t mention it in the quick setup instructions. Download the owner’s manual for all the details. You shouldn’t have to install an app to setup your router and with this device, you don’t.The satellites were pre-paired so it’s as easy as logging into the router, going through the step-by-step setup process, and then turning on the satellites within range of the router. The web interface will show you when everything is connected. I was impressed by the range from the router to the satellites. The furthest satellite connected directly to the router without having to daisy chain through the nearer satellite. There are a couple of features that have caused confusion which has led to some bad reviews. First, during setup you’ll be offered to setup Netgear’s “Circle” Parental Controls. You have to use the app to do this, but you are not required to enable it if you don’t need it.Second, you will be encouraged to activate a free trial of Netgear’s “Armor” cyber-security suite. This is an optional free trial for a paid subscription service. If you do not want a comprehensive security suite you can simply decline to activate this service and use your Orbi like any other router. Demerits to Netgear for not making it more clear that you’re not required to subscribe to this service. Finally, some users are confused about the nature of this device. By default, Orbi functions as an Internet router and completely replaces your existing router. Install Orbi in place of your router and recycle the old router. It is just as suited to that task as most consumer routers and it adds a very good mesh wifi on top of it.If you already have an advanced router and you want to keep it and add mesh wifi then you can put Orbi on your network behind your router and configure it as just a mesh wifi access point for your home network and Internet. In the Orbi menus, select “Advanced Setup” and then “Router/AP Mode” and select “AP Mode” instead of “Router.” Disable the wifi on your existing router to avoid interference and connect to the Orbi access point instead.

It would be difficult to make the setup any easier – create an account, scan the QR codes, and wait for the units to update – that is pretty much it. Coverage and speeds are excellent. Couple notes; this is a bit different than some other systems in that all three units are not the same from a hardware standpoint. The ‘base’ router unit has two ethernet ports, the two mesh units do not. This is important in some configurations as it does not allow for ethernet backhauling. Secondly, I made a mistake and couldn’t figure out a way to log out of the app! I ended up uninstallling the app and grabbing it again from the Play store. Lastly, the app itself is a little bit cluttered, mainly due to Netgear’s desire to upsell you to subscriiption based services. They can mostly be disabled however to clean things up a bit if you so choose. Overall, an amazing value for the price (under $100) paid. Very happy with it overall.

Bought this as a very well-priced option to extend wi-fi signal abour 100ft to an outbuilding I was using as an office. The only problem I had is, which had nothing to do with manufacturing or software, because it worked great for what I bought it for, but it will NOT work with Google equipment (Nest, Home, etc.). Apparently nothing works with Google, except… Google. Great for the wi-fi extension though! Very easy set-up.

I have a 2600 sq ft house and have no coverage problems with this system. I upgraded from a R6250 and noticed an immediate benefit, even with the wired devices. Previously, my desktop would top out at 390 MB/s on a 1GBp/s ethernet connection to the router. No ethernet problems with the Orbi, I’m seeing the full 1GB/s. Even the Wi-Fi is seeing 800 MB/s, with an effective speed of around 500 MB/s to one of the speed test sites. This is the older model, that only supports 802.11ax (Wifi 5), but it is still fast enough to fully support a up to 1 GB/s. I typically have 12 to 15 devices connected to my network, with a mix of wired and WI-FI devices. Streaming on 4 TVs at once hasn’t been a problem. I wish I would have bought this years ago. I highly recommend for home use.

I reviewed multiple mesh systems and asked friends for advice. They were pro the Google mesh system. I have always liked Netgear so I too a chance. Not only was I happy about my decision, my speeds and coverage increased and amazed me! I would highly recommend this Orbi system to anyone! Above and beyond my expectations!!

  9. Amazon Customer

The connection seems fast and smooth, now that I have it set up. Setting up was a run around. Connect the cord to the INTERNET port, not the Ethernet port on the router. NOTATE which is Satellite 1 and which is Satellite 2 before you take the sleeves off. This will be helpful if, after set up, you discover one satellite has a subpar connection- you’ll actually know which one! But I got my steps and stairs in for the day, LOL.

  10. Kristen
